Google’s December 2024 Spam Update: What Website Owners Should Do

Google’s December 2024 spam update was a historical search update, not proof that every website losing traffic was penalized. Reports of sharp traffic declines can be useful signals, but individual experiences do not establish the cause or the size of an update’s overall impact. If your website’s visibility changed around an update, investigate the evidence before making major changes.

First, distinguish a ranking change from a technical problem

Open Google Search Console and compare clicks, impressions, queries, and affected pages across relevant periods. Check whether the change is limited to particular sections, devices, or countries. Review analytics, tracking changes, server errors, robots directives, canonical tags, and indexing reports too.

Review Google’s spam policies

Check the official Google Search spam policies for practices such as scaled content abuse, cloaking, doorway pages, link spam, and misleading redirects. Remove or correct practices that violate the guidelines. Publishing AI-assisted content is not automatically a violation; the concern is content produced at scale primarily to manipulate rankings without providing value.

Audit content quality and purpose

  • Confirm each important page answers a real audience need.
  • Replace unsupported claims with verifiable information.
  • Improve thin pages where more substance would help readers.
  • Consolidate overlapping pages only when they serve the same purpose, and plan redirects carefully if URLs must change.
  • Keep useful pages rather than deleting content simply because it has few visits.

Review links carefully

Look for evidence of link schemes involving your own actions or paid placements that pass ranking credit. A large number of unfamiliar or low-quality links is not, by itself, proof of a penalty. Do not disavow links indiscriminately; Google’s disavow links guidance describes this as an advanced tool for specific situations.

Check for a manual action or security issue

Review the Manual Actions and Security Issues sections in Search Console. If Google reports a manual action, follow the stated reason, correct the underlying issue, and submit a reconsideration request when appropriate. If no manual action is present, do not assume a spam penalty solely from a traffic decline.

Make measured improvements

Document what changed, prioritize fixes supported by evidence, and monitor performance over time. Avoid mass URL changes, sudden bulk deletions, or guarantees that a particular recovery timeline will work. Search performance can fluctuate for several reasons, including competition, demand, seasonality, technical changes, and algorithm updates.
